The future is chosen, not predicted

It is easy to talk about the future as if it were weather — something forecast, awaited, endured. The headlines ask what AI will do to us, as though we were standing on a shore watching a wave decide our fate.

But the future is not weather. It is the accumulation of choices: which policy to pass, which treatment to fund, which risk to take, which warning to heed. Civilizations are not carried by currents. They are steered, decision by decision, by people who could have chosen otherwise.

If that is true, then the most important thing we can improve is not the speed of our machines but the quality of our choices. A society that decides a little more wisely — with better evidence, clearer tradeoffs, and honest accounting of what it does not know — bends toward a different future than one that decides in haste, in the dark, or on the word of systems no one can question.

This is the quiet, stubborn optimism beneath everything Enpath does. Not that technology will save us, and not that it will doom us — but that it can help us choose better, if we build it to keep people in the chair where the choosing happens.
